When I look at the yearbook-esque picture of all the G20 leaders standing on the stage, one thing immediately strikes me. All of the female state leaders, from Merkel to Gillard to Rouseff, are wearing brightly coloured suits. Meanwhile, apart from the representatives from Saudi Arabia and India (who are both wearing traditional garb), all the men are forced to wear very similar and very boring blue and grey suits, like so many copies of “Agent Smith”. Why do only the women heads of state get to wear colourful and individual garb? Why can’t the men also express themselves?
