Pakistan officials have begun denigrating Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who assisted the CIA in confirming the location of Osama Bin Ladin, and even provided information on the existence and movement of couriers in and out of his Abbotabad complex. Last week Afridi was handed down a 33-year jail sentence for “treason” by a court in Pakistan.
According to a piece by Reuters: “In interviews over the weekend, several current and former Pakistani officials described the doctor, Shakil Afridi, as a hard-drinking womanizer who had faced accusations of sexual assault, harassment and stealing. They said his main obsession was making easy money.”
I make no claims about the relative validity or fallaciousness of these claims. Rightly or wrongly, Pakistani officials are obviously attempting to cast doubt on the character of Afridi in order to win the media war surrounding his 33 year jail sentence. What I do question is why the US are replying to this. These accusations have nothing to do with the alleged treason, nor his involvement in the killing of Osama Bin Ladin. They should not be involving themselves at all. Please, stay on topic.
