The Polonnaruwa Vatadage is a circular building with entrances at the north, east, west, and south, located . At the centre of the structure is a small Stupa, and at each entrance is a beautiful sculpture of Lord Buddha. According to my guide, this is the only instance in Sri Lanka where a Stupa and a Buddha can be found within the same space, normally they are located in different areas so they may be prayed at separately. This building also boasts some of the best guard stones (the stones on each side of the staircase) that I have seen anywhere in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately the roof (which was made of wood) has long since vanished, and the rest of the structure (noticeably the Stupa and one of the Buddha’s) is fast going in that direction, but it is still a magnificent sight to behold. Here are my pictures of each entrance.
