This is only a short clip from a larger speech by Emmanuel Jal but it has really made me think about the plight of child soldiers. In it, Jal recounts what he considers the lowest point in his life, when starvation almost drove him to cannibalism. But what really comes across to me is the utter desperation. We tend to think of Child Soldiers in terms of a lost childhood and innocence, but I never really thought before about how their experiences in war can be more acute forms of what adult soldiers experience. In this case desperation.
