This was a story that aired on the news a few days ago but I was only just able to track it down; an eccentric Chinese billionaire has started selling and giving away “canned air” in light of China’s air pollution problems. While this particular stunt may seem strange, there is a larger point to be made here. While many lift up a completely unregulated market as something we should be striving for; this is the result of a completely unregulated market. In a perfect laisse fair system we would allow companies to pollute as much as they want while other companies supply us with the requisite breathing masks and “air cans” in order to go about our day to day lives. Supply and demand without thought for the bigger picture. I don’t really believe anyone wants this, but, at it’s most extreme, this is what laisse fair means.
