On the whole I am against government advertising. In some instances it is good, but too often it is abused by the government for (arguably) partisan purposes. The recent widespread (and costly) advertising, in Australia, of the Australian Government's new asylum seeker policy is a good example. But in the run up to this year's election the Australian Electoral Commission has come up with a commercial with a truly stunning message. They are trying to convince Australians who aren't on the electoral roll to put themselves on the electoral roll. And they have chosen to do this by convincing Australians of how valuable their vote is. Watch:
