Critics of evolution quite frequently posit that it is impossible to “believe in” evolution because we cannot see it happening. Some even claim there is no “physical proof” of evolution. And I am sure we all remember Christine O’Donnels famous “well why aren’t monkeys still turning into humans” or something like that (I can’t remember the exact wording, and I can’t be assed looking it up, just google it).
Well today I stumbled across an amazing rebuke to this idea. While watching Richard Dawkins clips on Youtube, I noticed he remarked offhandedly that viruses are constantly evolving to become resistant to medications. This is something we have all heard of before I think, but I doubt many people (before today, myself included) had made the link between this and evolution. It is true. Many viruses evolve to overcome medications and treatments that we use to cure them. And these viruses live on. This is an obvious example of “survival of the fittest”, or, in other words, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. The viruses that evolve live on to terrorize us, while the others die out. Voila.
