The rise of car sharing and the $500 million USD offer for Zipcar, one of the largest car sharing companies in the world, by Avis Budget Group, one of the largest car rental companies in the world, can give us some insight into how our world is changing.
The rise of car sharing coincides with increasing worldwide urbanization. Urban centres often house large amounts of traffic and hard to find parking, feature shorter distances between services, and (generally) better public transport. Car Sharing fits this world in a way that owning cars doesn't. While people who share cars can use cars when and if they need them, people who own cars will continue to spend less time in them. As the world becomes more urbanized, the necessity and incentive to own personal transportation becomes less. Coupled with companies that often offer free fuel and insurance, this may be the wave of the future.
